People who work ARE owed a living for what they do. That's a basic principle of the labor market. No economy can thrive that consistently pays its workers less than they can live on.
I presume that Maher doesn't think that writing is "real work." If he pays people to write his jokes, that might be news to them. If he doesn't, it would explain why he's not a very funny comedian.
@DavidSalo he claims to be one of the writers in the clip. I've only seen a handful of his shows but, IIRC, he has an even smaller monologue bit than late night hosts. HIS writers might be part time if that's what he's basing it off of.
But part time in TV is still like 30 hours a week which damn well deserves a living wage.
