Fucking pieces of utter dogshit. Married ladies, get rid of your husbands surnames. Now. You’re in danger.

newrepublic.com/article/186160

My late mom actually ran into a problem similar to this one when she moved states with me. Her name change when she married of course didn’t match her birth certificate so she had to find another way to prove who she was when she was applying for a drivers license. I didn’t have an issue because I never took my ex husband’s surname so my names matched.

@Zevon They are that. Always got their daggers out.

@Siren_six

I still don't understand how they think this will work. A marriage license is a legal document that proves your name has been changed.

Unless they plan to delegitimize marriage licenses?

I had to show a copy so I could change the name on my social security card, and so I could get my passport.

I have no doubt Republicans would try this, I just don't understand how they intend to void the legality of a marriage license.

@Tarnagh If they make a law that says your voter ID name has to match the name on your birth certificate the marriage license won’t matter anymore.

@Tarnagh and that’s exactly what they just tried to do.

@Siren_six

Oh. F*ck.

So they're bypassing any legal name change entirely. Or trying to.

@Tarnagh Exactly. I would also believe JD when he talks about “one vote per household”

@Siren_six

How would we even change our names back, assuming we wanted to?

A legal name change costs money that a lot of people don't have. So far as I know, a woman taking her husband's name is the only "free" name change anyone gets.

I'm sure they'll make it as difficult as possible to change back. 🤬

@Tarnagh It’s true it may not be an easy process. But again the GQP doesn’t care about us. We’re not human to them and we never will be. And if they want us to go back to blowing up their churches and stabbing them to death in their beds, we can do that, too.

@Tarnagh @Siren_six

People are getting off track. The idea is to make it difficult for people who move often and lose documents, who don't have places to mail letters in their neighborhoods, who don't understand the ins and outs of where to apply to get certified copies of documents. If you can get a passport, you can vote. But you can't do it before Nov 5 if you're only starting now.

If no name changes from birth certificates were acceptable, JD wouldn't be able to vote, either.

@Tarnagh @Siren_six If we don't stop them, they can and will do whatever they feel like to us.

They don't really care about laws, they think laws should just exist to give them the right to do whatever they want to the rest of us.

@Tarnagh @Siren_six It's possible they just didn't think it through, because they are dumb.

But let's assume they have nefarious intent.

In such a case, some people have suggested, perhaps the plan is to let people get married, then if their name is changed (usually women, but sometimes men, too), they can't vote any more. Tra la! A bunch of women and hyphenated-name-type-sissy-men can't vote no more! Tee hee!

I mean, Republicans _are_ as stupid as they are evil, so who the heck knows?

@AskTheDevil They’ve also been quite vocal about wanting to take women’s voting rights away. You know that one vote per household vote is the man’s vote sad not the woman’s. @Tarnagh

@Siren_six @Tarnagh Of course. And of course, the more babies the guy forces on her, the more votes he gets.
