I actually think this underplays the seriousness of Watergate. Nixon was abusing federal powers to sabotage opponents and interfere in the 1972 election. It *was* an attack on democracy.
Nonetheless, Dean is right that #Trump's direct coup attempt goes far beyond Watergate.
@catlynne333 But, at the same time, it was far worse than people tend to remember.
@catlynne333 Yes, but that means you are one of the relatively few who does know what was going on then. Most people now think "it was just a burglary."
@RationalLeft Yeah i guess your right We were helpless to do anything about the spying except discuss it
@catlynne333 Just so. Nixon *was* using the gov't and outside operatives to subvert the democratic process. It wasn't on the level of Trump's flat-out coup, but it was much worse than many people realize.
@RationalLeft Yeah we were like hes the president what can we do?
@RationalLeft by the way McGovern was a candidate i was proud to campaign for
@catlynne333 It has been pointed out that his electoral coalition was similar to today's D voting bloc... which got much bigger as the population changed.
@RationalLeft I dont know i worked on the McGovern campaign we knew we were being spied on.. it was not a secret in the campaign
