Some R opposition has indeed surfaced to the MAGA rules package. Without that, the whole McCarthy "deal" falls apart.
My guess? Rs are too desperate to end the Speaker debacle to stop the rules package. But a bunch of them are furious about it.
If they let it pass they're postponing the next party crackup. But the party is even more divided. That's why one R has already reminded Kevin about discharge petitions - which could bypass the rules package.
@RationalLeft If they are that pissed about it - only need a 1/2 doz. or so to vote for Jeffries - that would end the debacle also!
@Gladari Even the pissed off ones don't want a D Speaker. They're very partisan Republicans. They're just not completely insane.
@RationalLeft Given a comparison with Eisenhower (R), that sounds like an oxymoron, but compared with TFG "not completely insane" sounds about right these days!
@Gladari Not completely insane includes , e.g., knowing that it's political suicide to default on the debt or abolish social security and Medicare... so yes, I'll take it!
Oh yeah, just blowhard MAGAts shooting their mouths off. They will get nothing done over the next two years.
I believe the House can impeach a prez but can't convict without going thru the Senate.
@Jacki @RationalLeft The House Impeaches - the Senate convicts & removes from office
@Jacki @Gladari That's correct. The House can impeach, but only 2/3 of the Senate can convict... which means all Rs plus 18 Ds. Not happening.
But one reason Rs were so angry that their House majority is so tiny is that it makes it much harder to even do a show impeachment. It's far from clear they'd have the votes, when even 5 Rs can kill it.
@RationalLeft Oh, just the House (R)'s, yes. That doesn't mean that they wouldn't do it if they got the Senate & WH! There are plenty of Senate (R)s who'd do the same, they just aren't in control right now.
@Gladari They'd need a huge majority... and they'd probably never win one again after doing it.
@RationalLeft I remember W trying to Privatize Soc. Sec. right b4 he crashed the whole economy in Oct. 2008. Then Paul Ryan trying to voucherize Medicare!
Oh they'll keep trying, if it ever does happen I might just as well crawl right into a casket & get cremated! On Medicare & Soc. Security, but of which I paid for my entire working life. I still pay for Medicare with deductibles, co-pays, cost sharing AND premiums! Entitlements my arse!
@Gladari Even the craziest Rs mostly want to grandfather in current recipients to avoid instant political catastrophe.
Though I don't think that dodge would help them much. As the response to their abortion evasions showed, voters aren't that stupid.
@RationalLeft 🤞 🤞 🤞 🤞
Hard to believe that voters aren't that stupid when we look at the R's who've been elected President & to Congress since Eisenhower! Every single R elected POTUS since then has been a criminal!
@Gladari The American pattern is that people complacently ignore things until they get much worse than they ever had to, and then wake up. We saw that happening in the midterms.
@RationalLeft I keep thinking of the "Germany syndrome"...🙁 😢
@RationalLeft @Gladari
Isn't it also true that certain GOP calling to impeach Biden can't do so without the Senate in agreement? I'd say Greene & Boebert threatening to do this is just theatrics also.
