Hidemi
by Patrick Shiroishi

“The concentration camps that Japanese Americans had to go through has been a major part of my work for the last couple of years,”

All of the album was written and performed by Shiroishi who sang and played alto, baritone, tenor, C melody, and soprano saxophones, stacking up layers of harmonies often each recorded in one take.

@corlin That made me think of the books written by Joy Kogawa who was sent, as a child, to one here in BC along with her family. Highly recommended if you haven't read her before - start with Obasan (Grandmother)

@NorthernInvader @corlin when I was a teen we moved to an part of the Fraser Valley where the Japanese Canadian farmers had been forcibly removed from their farms and properties. The area still had an abundance of the fruit and nut trees they had planted. There were abandoned orchards, barns and houses. It was odd. I could feel something wrong had happened on that land.

I grew up in South Van near Marpole. Used to frequently ride my bike (mid 50s) over to Steveston and could still see a lot of homes and fishing boats that were confiscated. It was very concerning.

@corlin

oh yeah, Steveston! I remember the blatant prejudice of the older caucasian generation against the Japanese Canadians who were interned. @NorthernInvader @corlin
