@redenigma @Armchaircouch In the early years of the republic, the president and vice president were not really yoked together at all. The Vice President was whoever got the second most votes for President in the Elector College. Sometimes a Vice President would remain in office while a new President was elected and installed. The last example of this tradition was John C. Calhoun.
