#OTD 18 years ago, I began my job as a librarian at SVU, a small liberal arts college. It was my first professional librarian job, and I had to drive an hour over a mountain to work each day. It paid pennies, but my 3 children got a combined 8 years of tuition-free school. It led to my job at the Marshall Foundation where I am a lone arranger but the happiest librarian in the world.
@MidnightRider
Loving what I do helps prevent burnout, which is a real threat to one-person library/archives. Huge amounts of work that will never get done ...
@MidnightRider
Mine began working at a college dining hall. It was a good start but not where I wanted to stsy.
@MelissaHDavis My dad had us picking up trash at probably 4. Also stamping the business address on the maps with an ink pad and organizing the cabinet. Pay was pocket change, breakfast and a soda. I wish I could do it with him tomorrow because being with him was awesome.
@MidnightRider
I babysat. Lots of hours.
@MelissaHDavis I progressed to minimum wage, cleaning the public restrooms and then wrenching. I didn't know it then but what I learned would save me tens of thousands of dollars throughout my lifetime.
@MelissaHDavis I loved what I did. I loved the colleagues, the company, the science, the swagger, the pay. It was all far beyond what I ever imagined would happen in my life which began pumping gas. So I can totally relate.
