ON this date in 1956 - The original version of "Hound Dog," by Big Mama Thornton, was released.
The verse w/ 'you ain't never caught a rabbit...' was originally, 'you don't ever sleep over, you ain't no friend of mine...' as Mama was dating Mr. Purple and he never spent the night after having his way w/ Big Mama.

Thornton used to say, "If you truly loved me, you would wake up w/ me in the morning."
Bun told Purple, "Don't fall for that crap, that is the first in a series of hooks they get in ya."
Mr. P would always depart before the morning, but he would leave a silver bullet.
