ON this date in 1967 - Johnny Carson quit "The Tonight Show."

NBC ran re-runs for a time while Carson's agents, Bun Man and Mr. Purple, negotiated w/ the network.

He returned three weeks later after getting a raise of $30,000 a week.

The clincher was when Bun Man told NBC that Johnny would bring in a new character, Carmac the Magnificent.

Carmac was modeled after Purple's father who was a 'see-er' and worked the local carney circuit.
