Anybody remember James Stockdale? He was Perot's running mate. I remember a televised debate with him, Quayle, and Gore. Stockdale was a war hero, and for 7 years he was brutally tortured as a POW in Vietnam, but never cracked. At the debate, he was unprepared and forgot to turn his hearing aid on. Those two jerks ran rings around him and he became a laughing stock. Perot and Stockdale still got 19% of the vote in 1992.

I was just thinking about that too. Nixon lost by 112,000 votes. He got creamed in the electoral college though. And there were massive allegations of voter fraud. I swear we live in an ideological snow globe.
@tgraph52
Of course - I am aware that things are different now. America didn't know Nixon was a criminal until AFTER he got elected.
@MPCavalier π€ Yeah Ross Perot. Convinced a whole lot of young Engineers to join EDS Engineering Design Services with no seniority, no unions, no job security. At some point he sold the company to a Chinese firm and some other stuff happened. The engineers had to choose once again to stay and become General Motors Employees or go with new owners. My relative stayed and has a good retirement and health insurance. His libertarian friends in their 70s are still working. They lost everything.
@MPCavalier Anyway, yeah, that was a whole thing.

Fresh out of hospital and without the benefit of makeup, Richard Nixon ceded a major opportunity to challenge his upstart Democratic foe
