Weekend #Ekphrasis challenge, for those who follow #CoSoArt. (Shall we make this a "thing", for those who want more creative expression shared on CoSo?)
This is "The Watcher" by Kellen Rodrigues. What writing, music, or visual art does it inspire from you?
@MLClark Thanks for the new word. Ekphrasis
There's a little black spot on the sun today/
(That's my soul up there)...
I love this idea. I'll come back to it later. What does it inspire from you? 👀
Flash fiction! We shall see~! :)
(That's why I decided on "Weekend". Let's let the art thoughts percolate!)
@MLClark it reminds me of Nowhere and Nowhere’s been done: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7BW-r5Mf8X4&pp=ygUeY291cmFnZSB0aGUgY293YXJkbHkgZG9nIGludHJv
@MLClark I’m getting back into writing full time after several years of block. Are there other exercises you recommend?
Welcome back! That question depends on you: What kind of writing did you used to do, and what kind of writing are you looking to do now?
@MLClark I’ve primarily focused on poetry and prose but I’m trying to start long form now
Long form can be daunting, because people trying to rebuild writing muscles tend to balk at the size of the task ahead, get frustrated by their first efforts falling short, and abandon the draft.
1) It helps to read: maybe not in the genre of one's intended story, but with clear craft purpose, studying rhythm, sonics, and narrative beats.
2) It also helps to write side pieces, like a scene from the POV of a key character, to explore "voice" and build confidence.
But mostly,
3) It helps to approach the work with curiosity about yourself. Your first draft is going to be a conversation with yourself about the story you want to tell - and it will contain all the censorious fears and hesitations that *you* have, about your plot, setting, characters, and voice.
This isn't a mark of failure *at all*, but many writers don't take the time to study what those early drafts are telling them. Make sure you study yours.
Happy writing!

@MLClark Thanks very much for taking the time to type out these tips! I’ll let you know how it’s going one day.
So this is a wee warm-up exercise I do:
Give yourself a prompt, *one page*, and a pen. No correcting as you go. You are stuck with the words you set down, and have to try to craft a full story by the page's end.
This is the "flash page" I wrote for the above image prompt. Not stylistically perfect, but still - it has an arc and conveys a world. That's enough to get cracking on the "real" writing today.
