As per usual, my news brief isn't *that* brief--but only because it's important to read the news in context.

So if you're curious about Modi being present at a Hindu temple opening on the site of a razed mosque, I've got more details: history not just of the mosque razing, but also other recent events in India that worsen current ethnic tensions & heighten the risk of sectarian violence breaking out under an emboldened Hindu nationalism in an election year. Rough times.

@MLClark Both Muslims and Christians are attacked, persecuted in India. This Hindu temple being where it is will no doubt cause trouble.

Yes! I linked to one overview of Christian violence in the piece, but it's a much more complicated theme, which I discussed in my Fascism in India series.

One really painful site of Christian persecution in India is among the Dalit, who flee Hinduism for the caste abuse, only to face double persecution for having tried to leave at all. Dalit Christians also report that local Christian churches don't always offer enough support for their new members, leaving them trapped all around.

Although Christian sites often mention the persecution of Christians in India, I don't see many going beyond the raw numbers to look at demographic context - so I'm not surprised that those details are a little harder to access, even if you're paying attention well!

Also, we can only monitor so much as individuals, no?

But together, hopefully, we can hash out all the info we need to act for change where we can, however we can, to push back on oppression and hate. Cheers, Matt.
