I don't go to the movies, anymore.
I stopped going since 2017, when i saw Blade Runner 2049.
I remember the sound pressure hurting my ears. I had to put my fingers in my ears to block the sound. It was the first time in the cinema that I really felt scared by the excessive volume.
Since that day, I've had #tinnitus in my left ear.
And that's why I'm not going to the movies anymore. I don't care if the movie is "meant to be seen in IMAX format" etc.
I'll watch it in the comfort of my home.
Thanks -- yes, it was unfortunate.
On what you said:
"I do prefer watching at home, where I can control the sound, put on closed captions, pause whenever I want, etc."
I entirely agree. And it's not like 20 or so years ago, when the average size of a tv at home was perhaps 32" and decent sound was also more expensive. Now 70" screens are affordable as are decent sound systems, sufficiently good for most people, anyway.
Going to the movies is almost an inconvenience.
@Kryptos
My screen is slightly smaller than 70", but that's to fit the room, so it still gives the effect.
I don't have surround sound, but I do have a sound bar that works well.
