To hold certain beliefs is to belong to a certain tribe, and people are so tribal -- ultrasocial, zoologists call it -- they will literally willingly die (and kill) for their tribe's beliefs.

So it's all code for some kind of existential angst, and it doesn't matter that none of it is really true in fact because it's emblematic of a narrative that they "deeply believe" to be "really true" on a level that's beyond mere facts? In other words, the story doesn't need substantiation as long as it reflects their inner, unexamined and unexaminable fears and prejudices?
