Chindi - Jack McDevitt
This is probably one of the more divisive books I will recommend. It's a love/hate relationship for this book.
This book is the 3rd book of a larger series, I cant speak to the all of the series but Chindi is one of my all time favorites and Omega is really good. Chindi scratches that itch for space exploration that few books do. The sense of wonder and imagination and atmosphere make up for some inconsistencies in pacing IMO.

It also has a female Han Solo, so it might go well for someone not in the usual Sci-Fi demographic. I didn't know there was books proceeding Chindi when I read it, and I dont feel like I missed out by not reading them first.
If the idea of ancient alien artifacts and archeology on foreign planets interests you, or if you ever wanted to see what Rey might be like as a freelancer pilot wandering the galaxy Chindi might be right up your alley.
