Called a doctor's office to see if they were accepting new patients. Their response:
"No"
and then they disconnected the call.

@BrazenlyLiberal I admit to being wary when the call was answered automatically with "Due to people being too lazy to work. . . " I thought it was a joke at first, but now. . . yikes. I'll happily drive 45 minutes to a good internal med doc. You're right - did dodge a bullet.

Sounds like you dodged a bullet there. I'd be surprised if that practice turned out not to be an overbooking money mill. No time to be a decent human being to someone who won't be writing a check.
When we moved here and I was looking for a doctor, the first one we called was fully booked and not taking on new patients, but they took some time talking to me and gave me some good recommendations. I've always remembered how kind they were and have recommended them based on that.
