In the UK, no political party is allowed to advertise on television. It is prohibited. Not even during an election cycle.

Instead, each party gets a Party Political Broadcast (PPB) which is 5 mins long, usually shown just before the evening news (allowing everyone to turn off!) Each party gets a specific number of PPBs.

America could really learn from this.

@Florence There are campaign spending limits in each constituencey too, based on the population. UK politics are far from perfect, but I'm staggered at the amount of money required to run a campaign in the US.

@peter_by_the_sea Yes. Absolutely. Thanks so much for adding the above. ❤️

@peter_by_the_sea You're a fellow person, now I HAVE to follow you. We're apparently due some snow soon. I'm freezing too!

@peter_by_the_sea @Florence You shouldn't be surprised, everything in the USA is $. I absolutely love the idea of muting both parties and limiting their airtime. Imagine what good could be done with the obvious multiple millions spent on advertising in GA alone. Then these same people get a microphone and say hey you citizens cost too much, this week we are cutting X.

@MidnightRider @peter_by_the_sea I know, I vote in both countries. America is out of control with them. And, yes, think what that money could do.

@Florence @peter_by_the_sea It will never be right. Government for and by the people is a pillow sham, a myth.

@Florence Most PPBs I have watched are advertisements!

@Achernar Of course but they are strictly limited. Try living in the US you get thousands of them, all the time. There are spending caps in the UK. The PPBs are clearly labelled as that. And there aren't over many of them. No comparison at all.

@Florence I can see where you are coming from. I was not trying to make any comparison - I have never lived in the US. I sometimes have my work cut out to avoid an overdose of politics in the UK. It is a relief to escape to Malaysia in winte.

@Florence Heck yes!
The US political arena is the original shitshow of politics.

@Florence
Oof. Yeah we could. I only wish we'd do something like this...

It would be more affordable, for one thing.

Politicians spend a buttload of money creating and airing political ads here. It means that only people with a buttload of money to spend have any realistic chance of representing the people. That has always seemed like a real problem to me.
