I should add to this that the alcohol consumption laws remain the same, so you can't get your 'minor bride' drunk at least. Which isn't much to be thankful for.
@Nordicfae It really has little to do with that. The very Red states have always allowed child marriage, so long as they have parnetal consent. In fact, in this particular case, the pre-existing age of consent was 13, the GOP simply voted to remove the age thing at all.
@Nordicfae PS Sorry! I didn't mean my reply there to sound dismissive of your toot. It's just an issue I've followed for 40 odd years and I get so frustrated when American folk talk about how awful child marriage is in other countries (which is certainly is) but refuse to acknowlege we've ALWAYS had this problem in certain states.
@Florence @Nordicfae i found this interesting map of EXCEPTIONS to the prohibition on underage drinking. family/spouse, and at home. i was surprised at the number of states with exceptions.

In 1880, 37 states set the age of consent at 10 years, 10 states set an age of consent at 12 years, and Delaware had an age of consent of 7 years. What the fuck, Delaware? In 1871 they LOWERED it from 10.

.... OH. Apparently, this law wasn't about marriage, it was about when to apply the death penalty for rape. The law said that if you rape a female under the age of seven you apply the death penalty.
this change would subject fewer people to the death penalty. 10 years for >7.
...ok, that's still fucked up, i'm done. for reals this time. :)
