In the UK, my quarterly power bill in the winter is normally around £350/£400. Due to the hike in prices, my estimated bill for this quarter is going to be £1200. I literally can't pay that. Therefore, no heating for me!

It really is ridiculous how many of us are in this situation.

@Florence Same for me and my 82 yr old mothers estimated bill went from £600 to £1,800....it's madness!

@Florence

I use electric heaters, One upstairs, the other downstairs, saves me a ton of money 💰

@dwalace4 It makes little difference, the bills are tripling for everyone. I just can't pay. The cancer charity is looking at ways of helping but, currently, no heating.

@Florence @dwalace4 We got a weird email from British Gas telling us how to save energy. It boiled down to "if you don't turn on devices, you will have to pay less".

@Florence @dwalace4 I bet EDF has similar crowd-control measures. Surprisingly, the email didn't mention "We will cut our extortionate profits to help you".

@Florence I’m so sorry you are dealing with black outs and horrific rate increases. I live in Texas. My electric bill has increased 62% due to privatizing Texas power grid.

@Florence Yep, I worked out that gas for a quarter would currently cost me £1200 *just for heating* (not counting hot water). That does not include electricity, and that would be keeping the house at 15C for two hours per day. Crazy.

@homebird Totally correct. Even if I use electric heaters (which ARE a little cheaper) it makes hardly any difference.

@Florence I get dressed every day with thermals, t-shirts, and sweaters, then light a candle-pot to keep one room above 15C - that's the best I can do. I know that when the frost hits, the heating will have to go on for burst pipes, but I am dreading it!

@homebird Me too. Fortunately, in a way, I'm in end-of-life care and so just stay in bed most of the time. I also have a heated electric throw thing which is quite cheap to run. But it really is ridiculous that this is the situation.

@Florence I too am disabled. So cannot walk/ exercise to warm myself up. You would think that being on disability, all this would be a lot more affordable, but no. I sit on my bed most of the day with a hot water bottle in the bed - does not do my back any good at all but at least it keeps the chill off. Gotta do what you gotta do!

@homebird Exactly, My lack of mobility also makes me colder and you MUST be careful, it can be dangerous. I nearly got hypothermia the other day (truthfully) had to be taken to hospital so they could warm me up! It's almost farce.

@Florence I believe you! They haven't a clue, have they?

@homebird Nope. Except, i think they probably DO, they just don't care.

@homebird @Florence Oh I remember winters like that in Minnesota. We had frost a foot high on our interior walls, our heating bill was double our monthly mortgage payment. Damn power company kept raising the cost to heat our homes.
