I have seen debris flows IRL and in film and been at the end of them as they hit a larger river and I've never seen one move that quickly. Those folks were just lucky they weren't swept away.

Having that much volume of water above you in an environment that isn’t structured to sustain it against gravity, is a really bad place to stay, if you don’t have to.
