@TetsuKaba and the really sad thing is that while the US no longer vaccinates for polio, unless you're traveling to certain regions, there's a large polio outbreak occurring in Gaza currently, and pockets in other parts of Africa. if that gets here... that's going to be a problem
@redenigma US doesn’t use live attenuated Polio vaccine, but does have Polio in the vaccine schedule. https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/hcp/imz-schedules/child-adolescent-age.html
@yogapaddlerun i had the sugar cube when i was 4. i have never had or been offered a booster.
i was told when kiddo was an infant that they no longer did polio vax because it was considered wiped out in the US. was it added back when polio showed up in NYC in the mid-2010s? because if so, kiddo needs to be vaccinated
@redenigma I would check again, I only know the type of vaccine was changed. For the oral vaccine there isn’t a booster schedule (that’s what I got too).
@redenigma @yogapaddlerun
The sugar cube (or little ampule of pink liquid) is a live vaccine and is felt to confer life long immunity — but that assumes a highly immune adult and child population. We assumed that with mumps and measles, but then we had to add second and third doses later.
The inactivated injection is safer, in that you can’t get actual polio from it (a rare complication from the live vaccine, but more common than actual polio in the US), but immunity doesn’t last.
@EileenKCarpenter @redenigma I believe all the US polio outbreaks lately have been from the live attenuated virus vaccine spilling over into unvaccinated household members.
@yogapaddlerun @EileenKCarpenter npo, the outbreak in NY was wild virus type2
@EileenKCarpenter @redenigma @yogapaddlerun The live vaccine is a source of ongoing polio infections for the unvaccinated in communities with poor sanitation. People who have received the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) excrete the live virus. The most effective way to prevent this is to use the IPV (Inactivated Polio Vaccine) as it protects against 3 three variants of the polio virus. OPV has not been used in the U.S. since 2000.

My kids got inactivated doses, then live vaccine booster, as a compromise.
