Mars and rockets are cool and such, and are worthy endeavours AFTER we address the clear and present dangers of habitat reduction, climate change, poverty, homelessness, etc.

This is just another unmoored fantasy from a person who believes saying something makes it real.
As Kelly and Zach Weindersmith point out, even an Earth suffering from advanced climate change that was in a post-nuclear war is a much better place to live than Mars.
We've got air, and water, and abundant sunlight, and the soil doesn't COME preladen with poison here.
If Matt Damon ate enough of those potatoes, they'd KILL him. Perchlorates.
