Some may remember when #CoSo was apart of the #Fediverse until many in the latter blocked #CounterSocial for blocking IP addresses from countries sending waves of attack bots: https://countersocial.documize.com/s/c30dhakp0nhtab60utag/countersocial-blog/d/c5piofvuaqg133k3is90/the-history-of-countersocial-and-mastodon
Years later, I noticed some instances blocking those same countries (albeit temporarily), while some banned countries permanently: https://c.im/about
However, none of those were defederated. 🤔
Also, if CoSo was fully in the Fediverse, it would be a top 10 instance: https://darnell.day/fediverse-rankings-top-30-active-instances-including-controversial-servers
@ecksmc Yeah, some instances get flooded with so much spam that they have to block countries by IP addresses to avoid having their site crashing (albeit most do it temporarily).
Others have temporarily turned off federation to deal with spam. #China 🇨🇳 & #Russia 🇷🇺 are to my knowledge the ones most frequently blocked.
@Darnell lol he told me that feature would never be used for country blocks but only individual IP blocking & if any instance admin did use it for country blocking he would deal with it
just trying to save face when i called him out when he rolled that feature out - always knew it would end up being used to block countries lol temp or not just shows what hypocrite he is
@LnzyHou You're welcome! Yeah, #CoSo is a great place. It's the #Singapore 🇸🇬 of social networks.
Is it strict‽ Yes! But by being strict #CounterSocial is able to keep out the trolls, spammers, criminals & those who spread false info.
@LnzyHou Oh wow! That is awful! I do know that once people ignore a warning they are usually banned.
I blocked him immediately. Someone else told me he was warned only.
@Darnell and Eugen Rochko promised me in a thread that this would never happen when he rolled the IP blocking as a feature
and he said if it did it would be dealt with
lmao
