I don't know who in the "price gouging is important to maintain supply and demand" crowd needs to hear this, but...
It's MUCH more efficient and saves more people to cap the amount of gas at the level needed to reach the next station than to allow a few people go get enough gas to travel beyond the red/yellow zone.
It's literally how we revolutionized JIT supply chains, FFS.
Let me provide a concrete example:
When I was trapped at the BP (closed) on the mountain in Helene, a gentleman brought in gas from SC and identified the nearest open station.
We topped off 20-25 cars to make sure they all had enough gas to make it to the station and pulled out.
Had we used that gas on a few cars to get to their final destination? Three cars instead of 20+.
