He was, quite literally, detained in and extradited from Cabo Verde at the request of the US government, despite not having a formal extradition treaty.
Apparently it's considered not the best option for escaping the US authorities. Yes, there are sites about this. No, I'm not going on the run - this was actually a bit of a story.
