I bought my first house for $62K (2B 1B). Current one for $146K (4B 2.5B, granny flat). I was a social worker when I bought the first.
Cosmic Jr moved back home when the bank laid him off, got a new job, but a 1B apartment would cost him more than my mortgage. He's got a down payment saved but only rentals in a sea of starter homes. I'd downsize but I'd just have less space with little gain.
I don't need a TV show. Everyone's life gets stuck when one generation's does.
I didn't mention cars because we are a cash buy used car family and we drive and maintain them until they are beyond reasonable repair. They ugly, but they arrive at the destination just the same. 🚙
