No more drunk driving? US automakers forced to adopt life-saving tech by 2024
...
A number of technologies currently under development could potentially fit the bill, including breath- or touch-based sensors to detect alcohol. Another potential option is using cameras to monitor eye movements to try to determine whether drivers are intoxicated.

I'm torn on this one. It would save lives, but it would be a radical increase in the surveillance state.

@Coctaanatis Nope. Humans never seem to learn the lesson "punish the criminals not the populous". Where's the camera to make sure they aren't reading on the horn pad or texting? Also xanax, klonopins and more, it's gonna be a busy camera. PS This isn't about safety either, it's all about insurance company profits and kickbacks to politicians.

@Coctaanatis

And tremendously popular with the sensor makers whose business has declined dramatically as drunk driving has declined dramatically.

It's an industry looking for money with potentially horrible side effects and it treats every driver as guilty by default.

@Coctaanatis
The number of false positives has to be zero or this tech will lock people out of their vehicles who are not impaired. Not an acceptable situation.

@Coctaanatis The US is unique in traffic fatalities. But it seems driving distracted at night might be a bigger issue. nytimes.com/2023/12/11/briefin
