It has a lot to do with fundamentalist Christians -- or that specific brand of republican -- it ties in with them not wanting their children taught evolution.
In the bible belt, there are people who 100% believe that men have one fewer rib than women, that humans walked the earth with dinosaurs, and the story of Noah and the flood was literal and factual. They believe this.
And public education teaches differently.
Plus, it costs money too and is desegregated.

Yes. Trust me. I live in the south among these idiots. They plan vacations to the ark, and don't want their girls to do anything but have kids and get married.

Public education is so, so important, IMO, but some people see it as a threat and others want to profit off education the way many colleges do. So certain groups are hoping to destroy it.
@janallmac @jaunty @CinnamonGirlE People are mad because there is a school funding referendum every few years. If the schools were adequately funded, we would not need these referendums. The arguments I hear from people are just awful: racist comments about handing out condoms, as people shouldn't have kids if they cant afford to feed them (which FYI does not come out of property taxes), calls for sterilization if kids require free lunch.
