12-year-old died less than 24 hours after he arrived at a North Carolina wilderness camp for troubled youth, officials say

@CinnamonGirlE that is so weird:

The day before, he had been “transported per parents by two men from New York to Trails Carolina Camp,”

It's like in the middle of nowhere and the parents had "two men from New York" transport him rather than bring the 12 y.o. there themselves. Weird.

@Priestess
The whole situation seemed strange. I would need to read more if possible.

@Priestess @CinnamonGirlE possibly Juvenile Authorities. That’s who took my brother to one of these hell camps.

He nearly died in the desert on a three day solo punishment trek. Returned with a broken wrist that was never right again.

I have a pretty low opinion of these places. 😞

@NorCalCherylLyn @Priestess
That's horrific! I really have no experience with them. This one seems to have had some trouble before. And this seems pretty suspect. Something happened to the little boy.

@CinnamonGirlE @Priestess imo they exist because people can make money from their penchant for abusing kids.

Parents are at their wits end with kids are hope against hope something will work. They probably do work for some but others die or are injured seriously.

I’d hoped they’d gone out of fashion in the 80s. Sad to see they’re still around.

@NorCalCherylLyn @Priestess
I do remember hearing about these type places from way back. I didn't really know they still existed. I am sure you are right. Both money and a sadistic need to hurt and control people keep them alive.

@NorCalCherylLyn @CinnamonGirlE
Many years ago, I had an extremely popular website that promoted charitable organizations and fundraising events, free of charge. A couple of those camps in NC wanted me to promote them. I looked into what they do, and turned them down. A camp gets shut down and reopens under new management. One camp was brutal towards LGBTQ youngsters and tried religious indoctrination, starving, putting kids in closets, and forcing hetero relations. Horrible.

@Priestess @NorCalCherylLyn
Horrible is the word for sure. I just will never understand the drive for people to be so cruel.

@Priestess @CinnamonGirlE that’s the treatment I learned of from my brother and research I did after he got home. They’re despicable!

@CinnamonGirlE I'm absolutely okay with these so-called camps & schools for "troubled" kids being burned to the ground, hypothetically of course. The reviews & videos are appalling.

@CinnamonGirlE I didn't realize there were so many out there until recently. A friend in HS was sent to one early in our junior year of HS & never returned. Let's just say that he's not okay decades later & I don't think he has any contact with his parents.

@CinnamonGirlE horrible! I recently listened to the Paris Hilton memoir and she was sent to those kind of “camps” as a teen. She talks about the abuse she endured during that time. She escaped a few times but was caught and brought back.

@LnzyHou
Mine handled all their own discipline. Thank goodness.
