I have, for real, encountered adults out there who don't even truly understand why we have night and day in a 24 hour period, so folks not knowing how long that period is isn't much of a stretch for me.
But to be fair to the responder, I think what they are failing to grasp is the lack of acceleration posited, not the time period.
