Oy! I loved Carey Price, but I’m taking a hard pass on this and unfollowing him.

The CCDAF is a firearm org and they use the promo code: POLY which refers to the Polytechnique massacre in Montreal in 1989 where 14 women were killed by a man that was jealous women were allowed to take engineering courses.

This is a hard no from me.

@Shelter @FPonTheDL They're all "oh we're just reacting to the account". My dad target shoots and used to get their magazine (I think they do a request for anyone with a licence and send them the mag for free at first). When he got it, it was genuinely a magazine for people who shot. Honestly, pretty benign. Over the years it morphed into "black helicopters zomg!!" adjacent bullshit. He unsubscribed mb a decade ago.

@Shelter @FPonTheDL My Dad goes to a range with round targets with other folks who shoot at round targets. Once a year they go to a private range on a guy's farm and bring their bigger stuff, but none of his buddies are "I shoot at terrorist shaped targets and I preparing for the coming revolution.. get the woke" nutters. He cuts those people out of his life and none are welcome at the club he goes to. That divide is super important.

@Camerondotca @Shelter @FPonTheDL A large reason I stopped shooting much is that I couldn't stand a lot of the people in the sport. I like going out to shoot clay pigeons with people who aren't nuts, but so many clubs have at least a token presence of complete kooks I can't stand.

@Camerondotca @Shelter @FPonTheDL and none of the shooting sports organizations in Canada seem like reasonable people. I've resented having to give any of them money to be able to go shoot for a long time. They've done themselves no favours in terms of building relationships or a reasonable discussion on how to better manage firearms and the law.

@NickTheSkydiver @Shelter @FPonTheDL yep. Instead of "the laws are fascistic" or "anyone who wants more laws is a fascist" they should 1) help folks deal with the laws as they are 2) get onboard with helping folks figure out reasonable balances..

@Camerondotca @Shelter @FPonTheDL I remember one of the orgs, I think the NFA which is far and away the nuttiest, adopted, "No compromise" as a motto, and then seemed confused as to why no one would listen to much less interact with them.

I'd argue we could keep most firearms legal for those who want them if we redirected energy to better licensing and trying to combat smuggling.

@Camerondotca @Shelter @FPonTheDL for example Toronto Police has a Twitter feed of all the firearms they seize. The majority are compact and subcompact handguns which have never been legal in Canada and were never legally imported. Buying up a bunch of rifles for millions or billions of dollars won't do a thing about that.

@NickTheSkydiver @Shelter @FPonTheDL dad went to a commercial range and they had human shaped targets and firearms for rent that were horribly maintained and he just sort of backed out of there and never went back.

@NickTheSkydiver @Shelter @FPonTheDL some glocks where the slides rattled side to side.. crap like that.

@Camerondotca @Shelter @FPonTheDL Rental stuff isn't really maintained, because those places mostly cater to people who want a one-time experience.

@Shelter @FPonTheDL also as far as I know, as long he respects the max number of rounds in the tube mag, no one wants his shotgun.

@Shelter @FPonTheDL (I'm largely good with the rule bing "no semi-autos, small mags/capacity, serious storage rules and periodic checks)

@Camerondotca @Shelter @FPonTheDL Mostly same, but semi-automatic isn't a bogeyman term. Lots of hunters use them for a number of reasons. Especially for smaller and/or disabled people they can be more manageable.

@NickTheSkydiver @Shelter @FPonTheDL oh totally. Mb "detachable magazine" is the line we draw then.

@Camerondotca @Shelter @FPonTheDL Yes, but even at that, not really that helpful a distinction. That's really the challenge about the technical description as criteria, you might wind up inadvertently including things that aren't as much the problem.

The whole new banned list now has become a bit of a farce and a distraction from real issues about gun violence this doesn't do much of anything about.

@NickTheSkydiver @Shelter @FPonTheDL oh totally. it's like the 'gang de rue" and "anti-gun squads" here in montreal. These serve the purpose of being good PR for stupid stenographer style journos and further oppressing already over policed communities. Better use of everyone's time would be stopping more of the folks like the dude they caught with the HUGE ASS duffle bag of ghost guns.

@NickTheSkydiver @Shelter @FPonTheDL I guess where I'm coming from is I work at a place that had a school shooting, I went to uni at a place where there was one and I have very very clear memories of the Polytech night. So I want people to have a really hard time reloading quickly. I recognize that you can drill to be faster but most of these dolts don't.

@Camerondotca @Shelter @FPonTheDL Understandable for sure. I want to keep firearms of all types well away from anyone who should not have them. Dawson College shooter legally bought his, and somehow a diagnosed schizophrenic got a firearms license, bought an SKS, and shot four people with it including two cops. That should not be possible but it is.

@FPonTheDL @Shelter I just checked: it's 5 rounds max. You can roll out with boxes of ammo, and no one cares if you bring more than one shotgun. So, potentially, you could be in your hide with like 5 shotguns, each with 5 rounds. BUT your daily max is 5-6 (depending on the bird).. so I have no idea what they all need more for.

@FPonTheDL @Shelter and I went back and the last minute amendments actually mean that they do want to come for some/all shotguns. Hmm.
