Ok, so, as you might be able to tell from my picture, I'm a mayo fella. I've been reading stuff over on mastodon (I'm running both, some friends have chosen there). How is CoSo for people who aren't mayo and cis and male? Like some of the instances over there seem to be having a pretty shit reaction to new folks who are not .. you know, me or me-like.
@singlemaltgirl I'm white. Very very white. Like mayo. I moisturise, so I'm not aging like mayo in the sun.
@Camerondotca you know what? i got that after i posted. doh!
in my defense, it's morning & i don't drink coffee.
so what you're saying is mastodon doesn't like white cis het males? how so?
The opposite.
People who are not white, cis het males are finding it unwelcoming.
@Shelter @singlemaltgirl @Camerondotca That has not been my experience. In fact, I'm finding a large community of autistic women - including a few who are late-diagnosed and older than me!
@researchbuzz @Shelter @singlemaltgirl I have not, to be fair, heard anything negative from neurodivergent folks, or at least not folks having issues for being neurodivergent.
@Shelter @singlemaltgirl Aye. I'm hearing transfolks aren't having a great time either on some instances. I'm on a NZ instance because a lot of friends are there and I fit in as honorary Aotearoan, so it's pretty small and chill. A friend who is super progressive also runs an instance, if I get annoyed where I am, I'll move there.. There is also a local punk one.
@Shelter @singlemaltgirl the local punk one seems to be full anarchist/antifa and will nuke shit from orbit if it even starts looking stupid.
If I could make a suggestion that you separate as "trans folks?"
Trans is an adjective, and it's preferred.
Otherwise it's like reading, "Largevehicle."
@Shelter @singlemaltgirl yeah, I don't know how that happened. I've never written it that way before. But yes. Point taken.
👍🏻 Thanks!
@Shelter @singlemaltgirl No, thank you.
@singlemaltgirl no, Mastodon is having issues with people who aren't like me. There have been some folks banned this week/weekend for having discussing racism and other stuff.
@Camerondotca uh oh. i wish i could say that's surprising. but i've found lots of sm spaces are not great for bipoc, 2slgbtq+, disabled, etc. folks. may explain why i've never been big on sm. i did the blue bird site for a bit for not like i do coso. & linkedin for work. that's about it.
that's unfortunate.
@Camerondotca while my experience will be different given that I am a white guy, toxicity is something that anyone can sniff out. CoSo does se very chill and welcoming. But it’s also still quite small so it could change when it starts to get to be 10 or 50 or 100 times it’s current size. Even though 90% of the people I followed on the bird went to Mastadon when they started to look elsewhere, I’m just not digging it. There is something off about it (already toxic, cliquie, I’m not sure…)
@TheRuralProgressive Some of the "use CW" discourse over there is.. erm.. Like, yes, obvious stuff, go for it. And a discussion of what counts as "obvious" or "needs a cw" is clearly a thing that should happen. But CW because your post has many words? Like? Dudes? Chill.
@Camerondotca that’s exactly it. It’s like a message board with aggressive mods and people being too precious about the space. Yes, have some rules and encourage good posting practices. But as you said, just relax
@TheRuralProgressive Like, people will get it, or they won't. The "use CW for long posts" reply was quite a bit past passive aggressive and firmly into just snide and aggressive.
@Camerondotca i feel like mayo is code for something here?
i think of mayo as a possible condiment for sandwiches. what are you talking about?
