Been thinking I should learn a FEW (at minimum) signs, just to be a more useful member of a society that includes many and people. So, today looked up a couple of the absolute basics and thought I'd share w/y'all!

Looks like there's a lot there, but the search tools are a bit dodgy? Perhaps just not optimized for mobile site; will check later from a desktop.

@CLManussier life print works better on desktop. It is a massive site that is run by professors who teach ASL. It’s very well-known for people who want to learn sign language, and rather than learning some thing like happy new year which you won’t use except for once a year you can learn some basic sign fairly quickly. There’s fingerspelling practice and there’s practice so learning how to sign numbers because it’s kind of important to know.

@J_Windrow

I'll def. check it out. That said, because I work part-time in retail, it seems to me that if I focus on picking up ONE new thing at a time that would be applicable to situations in which I've already encountered people who are and/or , I would have the best chance of remembering on the fly. Right now, I've got a decent shot of using my new phrase for the next 7-10 days!

So far, so good w/my strategy; though my vocabulary is small 🤏, it has definitely grown!!

🤙

@CLManussier

Consider learning: thank you, welcome, help, and nice meet you.

Help - you can ask if someone needs help or they can tell you they need help.

Thank you/Welcome is always good

nice meet you is both polite and welcoming

One of the people at PATH at the mall realized I couldn't hear and was able to do some basic sign with me and I donated to their program. Not Merry Xmas - nice meet you, thank you, welcome

Best of luck to you

Thank you/welcome is one I've known for years, along w/sorry and a few others w/fingerspelling.

Plus, we can all type on our phones, now for truly complex stuff. But, for the basics (especially the stuff I say to most everyone 8,000x/day), I'm looking them up as they occur to me, and then trying to share w/others since I've already found the video!
