Been thinking I should learn a FEW (at minimum) signs, just to be a more useful member of a society that includes many and people. So, today looked up a couple of the absolute basics and thought I'd share w/y'all!

@HealingHobbit @CLManussier Lifeprint (life print.com) is pretty awesome with fingerspelling practice on the website and everything.

I've learned ASL in Idaho, relearned it in Alaska, (found out there are regional variations) relearned it in Massachusetts, took a video course from NYC and both of those have regional differences. Relearned it again in Texas. Had someone tell me I signed Alaska wrong and told them that's how Alaskans sign it and I wasn't changing. LOL

@J_Windrow Oh, jeez! And then there's British, Canadian, and I imagine differing versions in other countries, too. @CLManussier

@CLManussier Most HOH don't use ASL. I'm one who does, from time to time. Most deaf (not culturally deaf) don't sign either. Of course Deaf (born Deaf to Deaf parents - Deaf Culture) do use ASL.

I wish everyone knew it.

A great place to study for free is through LifePrint run by Deaf college professors from California.

Thanks for the rec! There are many public school systems NOW that offer it as the language credit ~ wish that had been a choice when I was in school!

@CLManussier I learned ASL with my best friend during high school. She had been deaf since JK (meningitis) and relied solely on lip reading up until that point. Your post is a good reminder that it's probably time to brush up on it.

@J_Windrow
Looks like there's a lot there, but the search tools are a bit dodgy? Perhaps just not optimized for mobile site; will check later from a desktop.

@CLManussier life print works better on desktop. It is a massive site that is run by professors who teach ASL. It’s very well-known for people who want to learn sign language, and rather than learning some thing like happy new year which you won’t use except for once a year you can learn some basic sign fairly quickly. There’s fingerspelling practice and there’s practice so learning how to sign numbers because it’s kind of important to know.

@J_Windrow

I'll def. check it out. That said, because I work part-time in retail, it seems to me that if I focus on picking up ONE new thing at a time that would be applicable to situations in which I've already encountered people who are and/or , I would have the best chance of remembering on the fly. Right now, I've got a decent shot of using my new phrase for the next 7-10 days!

So far, so good w/my strategy; though my vocabulary is small 🤏, it has definitely grown!!

🤙

@CLManussier

Consider learning: thank you, welcome, help, and nice meet you.

Help - you can ask if someone needs help or they can tell you they need help.

Thank you/Welcome is always good

nice meet you is both polite and welcoming

One of the people at PATH at the mall realized I couldn't hear and was able to do some basic sign with me and I donated to their program. Not Merry Xmas - nice meet you, thank you, welcome

Best of luck to you

@J_Windrow
Thank you/welcome is one I've known for years, along w/sorry and a few others w/fingerspelling.

Plus, we can all type on our phones, now for truly complex stuff. But, for the basics (especially the stuff I say to most everyone 8,000x/day), I'm looking them up as they occur to me, and then trying to share w/others since I've already found the video!

@CLManussier asl is a beautiful language. I wish more people would learn at least the basics. Thanks for sharing.
