@Bliss As @Maude mentioned some time back, if all the Dems vote for Jeffries and a few Republicans don't vote for McCarthy, Jeffries would be Speaker.

TBH, I don't have confidence all the Dems have the necessary backbone to pull it off, but it would be sweet.

@BrazenlyLiberal @Maude
Jeffiries' race and progressive stance will be the catalyst for the GOP to unite.

There are many racists in the GOP, so a deal will be brokered easily based on who McConnel and the GOP leadership decide will lead their party. Neither MGT nor Boebert have votes. They are loose cannons that will only further hurt GOP brand.

McConnel will apply pressure using GOP party favors and money (and from his own war chest) to lure member votes to whomever they choose

@BrazenlyLiberal
Speaker requires 218 votes. Not enough dems to get Jeffries there. Will require a few GOP to cross aisle to vote for Jeffries and doubt that will happen.

This is going to be a real circus, and I'm going to love watching it. 🍿 πŸ‘€
@Bliss

@Maude @Bliss My mistake - I thought Speaker required a pluirality. Thanks for the correction!

@BrazenlyLiberal
No problem. πŸ™‚
Again, going to enjoy this circus and watch the clowns do their thing.

Now... if 4 or 5 Republicans meet with the Dem caucus & they can agree on a speaker... it shuts down McCarthy and the GQP crazies. Doesn't even have to be a member of Congress.
Wouldn't that be a hoot? 🀣
@Bliss

@Maude @Bliss LOL! That would be great. Unfortunately, it seems those most likely to balk at McCarthy are over on the far right: Biggs, Gaetz, Norman, Good, Rosendale.

@BrazenlyLiberal
We could fantasize! Hope cameras are rolling if this has been done on the down-low & is thrown at the floor in a complete surprise! 🀣
@Bliss

@Maude @BrazenlyLiberal
McCarthy got elected GOP leader with a vote of 188-31.

No progressive is going to go along with a GOP deal for someone from the outside. that would only unite gop and leave dems weaker than they already are.

GOP will elect McCarthy but they are going to have a hard time passing legislation.

@Bliss
As minority leader, yep, only a majority vote needed.
But for Speaker of the House, it's going to take 218.
@BrazenlyLiberal

Actually @Maude
it's a simple majority vote of all those present not 218. If McCarthy isn't elected I believe it will be the 6th time since 1900 that a minority party would lead the house.

But believe me. Just because you don't hear the squabbles on the Dem side doesn't mean they don't exist, they do. so C-Span will be very busy on Jan 3rd.

@BrazenlyLiberal

@Maude @Bliss I'm hoping McCarthy gets it, tbh. He's dumb as a box of rocks, sharp as a sack of wet mice. He'll never be able to wrangle a caucus the way Nancy could. I want to see him fail at his life's ambition. I want to see him cry on TV.
