@Bix I grew up agraid of being drafted to fight & die in a foreign undeclared war (Vietnam). Fortunately the draft ended before I turned 18. I respect those who fight for us but not those who pick the fights (politicians & generals).

The Vietnam draft business was weird because lottery numbers were made known in '67. Mine was a very low number like 23 or 24. So I enlisted in Jan of 68 in order to have some choices. Now when I try to look up information about the lottery I see indications that the lottery wasn't in effect in 68. WTH? On the other hand, my draft notice caught up with me in about the 4th week of basic training.

I felt more secure in Germany but I'm not sure my parents would have agreed with that. ( I arrived there maybe 5 weeks before the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in August.)
