y’all, can openers. the hand held kind.
is there some trick to these? do they just, cease to work after a couple of years? the turny part?

@Armchaircouch Pretty much, yes. And sometimes even when they're new they're not quite right.

@LiberalLibrarian @Armchaircouch I’ve had mine since the ‘90s Swing-a-way brand. Every once in a while I clean the gunk and lubricate.

Really! I’ll check them out! my mistake was probably buying the one with the pretty handle at Marshall’s come to think of it… @yogapaddlerun @LiberalLibrarian

I often revert to the P-38 military issue the Mister used decades ago. Trusty and never fails!

@CherNohio @Armchaircouch @yogapaddlerun @LiberalLibrarian

- HA!

I haven't heard anyone refer to
one of those in literally decades!

🏴‍☠️👍🏴‍☠️

@Armchaircouch Probably found in the drawers for oddball things of thousands of military veterans. 💜

@yogapaddlerun @LiberalLibrarian

I’m pretty sure the gunk free! It’s like the turn part just gets stuck and impossible to turn! lol @annamousse

@Armchaircouch I always keep 2 in the house for this reason. One will always just refuse to work. I'm probably gonna jinx myself now, but I have a pretty standard, yet heavy one that's been going for about 8 years now. I think it's luck more than anything. 😅

well, I’m considering going to one of the electric ones that my mom had when I grow up. I feel like she was onto something !! lol! @Halcyon

My new favorite is the kind that peels the top off the can and doesn't leave a sharp edge to slice you when you clean it for recycling. They're tricky to use at first. You feel like it's just going around and not opening anything, but after two times around, usually the top of the can just lifts off. (But not evaporated milk -- they never work for some reason.)

@Armchaircouch - they are a
machine... clean with a kitchen
brush & soapy water, dry & oil,
lightly with food grade oil, such
as olive oil, etc. 🏴‍☠️😉🏴‍☠️

@Armchaircouch they can, yes. the gears wear out, or the blade gets dull.

Huh! I mean, I guess it makes sense I just for some reason… I thought they were invincible or something 😂 @redenigma

@NMWoman @Armchaircouch i have the cheap OXO version of that. i've had it about 10 years & it still works fine, plus you can repurpose the cans/lids you use that type of opener on for crafts... because no sharp edges

@NMWoman @Armchaircouch cans make pencil or paint brush holders. paint or paper or ribbon on the outside (or go nuts with a glue gun & beads/"jewels")
lids i cut out interesting bits of cards or fancy papers, glue them in like a frame & put a hanging ribbon on. or use as coasters

@NMWoman @Armchaircouch kiddo will be 25 in August. he was helping me look for something in my room Saturday & found a box of baby food jars... i suspect if i haven't used them yet, they can be rehomed.

@Armchaircouch everything has planned obsolescence now.

should i mention i avoided peeling potatoes for years because it was too much work... then i realized that just maybe it was because my 40 year old vegetable peeler was just plain worn out?

@redenigma @Armchaircouch
I quit peeling potatoes for mashed potatoes although my peeler works fine. I just buy Bob Evans Mashed Potatoes. I done my duty peeling for 40 years! Ha!
