This is why I don’t watch previews or read reviews beforehand. I don’t know what is going on here, and I definitely am not supposed to…
THE OLD WAYS is a well-constructed, atmospheric possession tale. It has a lot going for it, although it feels a bit constrained, perhaps, by its own conventionality. Just under the surface, however, lurk many deeper and darker aspects, to which the film makes some overtures to address, but without doing so in a fully satisfying manner, yet its commentary on cultural effacement and childhood trauma are prescient and thematically hold the film together enough to make it worth a watch! 4/5
