A Thought Exercise for White People reading this.
How much #entertainment do you consume - #books, #movies, #TVshows, #music, etc. - that doesn't feature a white male lead or isn't written, produced or directed by white males?
Do you patronize businesses that are not owned or operated by White males?
This isn't a judgement or accusation. I'm not looking for answers so there's no need to comment. This is just something to think about.
@Iskios I would never stop someone from giving an opinion.
This thought experiment is as much about my own consumption as anyone else's. 🙂
@ADignorantium That's fair. But for me, the importance is the story, the type of story, the kind of music, etc. Whether the lead characters are male, female, gay, straight, black, white, asian, etc., don't seem to matter as long as the story being told appeals to my sensibilities. I recently read a sci-fi series called Star Kingdon in which the lead character was a Jewish Nerd. It woulld never have occurred to me to find out he was a Jewish nerd ahead of time.
@ADignorantium Honestly, I don't really pay attention. When I think on it, of the local (non-chain) businesses I frequent?
1 White male
2 Asian female
1 Hispanic male
I couldn't tell you about writing/directing etc but scripted drama leads?
3 white male
2 black female
1 white female
1 Asian male
Just off the top of my head,
@Graci To be honest, until recently, I haven't paid much attention either. But it is an interesting thought.
I make a conscious effort to read books by and watch movies/series from a variety of folks around the world. It's been an excellent practice that's led me to discover some things I love that I wouldn't have otherwise been aware of.
Art, I primarily buy from fellow queer artists--but always from actual living artists. I don't buy mass-produced prints.
I mostly order from locally owned restaurants (often minority-owned), but don't think much about shopping.
@tyghebright It doesn't take a lot of effort. Does it? I go thru periods of heavy reading and have occasionally walked into specialty bookstores, or libraries, and gotten recommendations based on my interests.
@ADignorantium I consume what I like. I don't consume it based on quotas. Since I am a latin male, I assume you didn't want my answer, though.
