The book I was trying to remember was "The Coelura"! I think I had just read "The Ship Who Searched ", so I picked up "The Coelura" when I saw it in the store.

@weirdfizz , I'm pretty sure the brain/brawn partner ship series was where I discovered Mercedes Lackey's work.

@LadyZurk I was given "The Ship Who Searched" because everybody knew I was way above my age group, but nobody knew what to give me. A relative was like, "It's got a kid in it. I'll give her this one."

@weirdfizz , I was the 11 year old carting around a paperback copy of Clavell's "Shogun" once upon a time (a while after it was "the thing" on TV.)

@LadyZurk My parents spent a lot of time saying, "A gift certificate is a valid gift. Let her buy the books she wants."

@weirdfizz , perfect! My mom would sometimes drop us off at the library and let us choose our own books to borrow, and books and magazine subscriptions were also given on special occasions as (holiday, birthday) gifts, along with music records. Things changed... but I continued that same tradition with my kids when they were younger. Mag, W and I still regularly choose and share reading materials together. 🩷
