A reminder that Republicans are most definitely NOT conservatives.
@Gord02 I'm a progressive: try to do good. Government works best when that's in principled opposition with conservatism: try to avoid accidentally causing harm.
It breaks down now when one side is progressive and pro-democracy, another side is populist authoritarian and anti-democracy, and nobody is conservative and pro-democracy.
If democracy survives it will be either through establishment of a new pro-democracy conservative party, or adoption of ranked choice preference voting.
@Gord02 I've read a number of accounts of the degradation of the GOP, each marking the initial descent from different points. Trump. McConnell. Tea Party. Gingrich. Reagan. Each abandonment of principles set the stage for the next, worse, betrayal. I think the best explanations are from Heather Cox Richardson. As an historian her writings read like a first draft of history.
@walterbays Until the Republican party put their allegiance behind a traitor, Conservatives were pains in the ass, but they weren't traitors. When Glitch McConnell whipped every RepubliKKKan to be part of the hive mind, the idea of being Conservative died, and Fascism took over under the cover of Conservatism. Now the term Conservative equates to Fascism which equates to being a traitor to our Constitution.
