It's happened: If your church argues that material wealth is a sign of God's blessing, it's only a short step to saying that poverty is a sign of God's curse, and that the poor are, ipso facto, evil sinners. And here we are:

This might have been a surprising conclusion to the 1st-century church, but history has never been sacrosanct in America. Why not tell your parishioners "Jesus was rich"?
