is needed as respite from war news, so tales of my rescue cats. Two came in a typical way. They ran in through an open door and would not leave. Champagne went on walks with me, dashing ahead to hide in the bushes then leap out to attack me, then run ahead to prepare her next ambush.

When the next cat came she slapped it around mercilessly, which the kitten thought was loving play. Named Doubtful after the Edward Gorey tale of her arrival.

We adopted Allie from a shelter when it became clear that our toddler needed a pet. He's grown now and she is recently gone and sorely missed. She slapped around the next tiny kitten, who also thought it a fine game which he continued to play as he grew to 3x her size, to her consternation. He was actually rescued by a friend of our son who brought him temporarily to our house because she had dogs. She never returned. I think she fled the state. Anyway we had a new cat. ...

Our current cat had another name for a while but soon his behavior revealed his true name, Fireball. He loves to kill anything that moves. A robot has saved lives of innumerable birds and lizards. He loves to be petted more than any other cat, and he likes to bite the hand petting him. He keeps me company in the spa, balanced precariously on the edge leaning down to investigate the water, which turns out always to be wet.
