Maybe, just maybe the problem is the hiring practices, too easy mental background checks, and tighter psych tests needed at the academy. Oh and speaking as a vet, stop hiring ex-military, and the one's who couldn't get into the military! FFS!

@tw33k Yeah, here in Ohio the Academy for the State Highway Patrol is run like boot camp and they seem to prefer Marine Corp veterans.

@tw33k: My son was out of the Army (Combat Arms) briefly due to injury and wasn't planning to re-up, and the El Paso cops wanted him to sign up. He made it through internets and all, and then in the final one they asked him the situation question: "If you think you see a little kid with what could be a pistol, what do you do?" He responded with the military RoE, and they said thanks and that he'd hear from them soon. They rejected him because he wouldn't shoot first. Honest to goodness.

@thedisasterautist El Paso might have a good hiring practice, but not police hiring practices are the same. Hence my point, we need better insight into why these kind of people keep getting hired, schooled, and let loose on the people they were sworn to protect. Army here too, Iraq war vet, and I knew and know lots of vets who are so high on themselves they would fire on that kid in your example without any remorse.
