When I go past my fishtanks I notice this smell coming from them sometimes. Fishtanks shouldn't smell BAD. I mean there is a smell especially a planted tank but it shouldn't smell like a swamp or something. I keep thinking there is a problem with the water ... we use tap water (which we don't drink) and I treat the tap water for use in the aquarium ... but just now ... I went to drink water in my water bottle and it has the same smell. This is water I put in there yesterday from our RO system.

Reverse Osmosis gets out SOME of the contaminants in the tap water but not all ... but ... I didn't expect it to still smell like sewage after sitting for like a half a day.

We NEVER drink the water out of our tap ... I don't even like showering in it. I come out of the shower smelling like a yak.

But I thought the RO system would help ... it doesn't ...

@thewebrecluse this surprises me. I don’t claim expertise, I have been researching RO to figure out a whole home system. Everything I read seem to lead to pretty much nothing passes through the filter. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@fuse I thought so too ... and the water that comes out of the RO tap does TASTE and SMELL better ... but if you let it sit ... it eventually smells exactly like the tap water which freaks me out.

We have had this problem for a while but it's only recently that we realized its something that happens when the temperature changes.

Hot dishes out of the dishwasher smell rancid when they have cooled. Ice water smells rancid after it warms to room temperature.

@fuse I need to ask a chemist? Or some kind of water treatment expert or something?

@thewebrecluse if its a problem (reads like it is) I’d consider getting the water tested.

@fuse I need to consult an outside expert for sure. This is .... not good. This is a new issue. The water always smelled ... but not like this.

@fuse Less than I paid for my RO. Even if I do a home test I'm not sure what I'll be able to do about the water situation in the building I live in. I doubt the management will consider it a real issue unless I get a professional in here ...

@thewebrecluse @fuse we have this problem often where I live when people have wells. It's sulfur and sometimes can't be filtered out before it's chemically altered to be "catchable." extension.psu.edu/hydrogen-sul

@CarmenSlamdiego @fuse It's definitely not hydrogen sulfide ... its not a rotten egg smell. It's like sewage ... like I could almost mistake it for my aquarium if I didn't know it came from the tap.

@thewebrecluse @fuse oof. Yikes. Well, hope you get it figured out. I would guess it's still some kind of bacterial growth, but I have no idea!
