On Wednesday, the House passed a bill that would remove a statue on display at the U.S. Capitol which depicts Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney.

Taney was behind the 1857 Dred Scott decision, which justified slavery and also categorically denied Black Americans’ citizenship.

The initiative was first introduced by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Rep. David Trone back in March 2020. The bill was passed by the Senate unanimously last week.
