I will never see a reference to something like "a portal in the kitchen" without being reminded of this delightful story about the lady who accidentally summoned a demon when she was making a sandwich:

: He wouldn't sit.
He wouldn't stay.
He wouldn't stay off the couch.
He was a...

Bad Boi.

@Bliss: ...wound up leaving them all hanging over the next several years. Of course, what he did was great for Wall Street, and the promise was once again that all the wealth would trickle down.

The Dems gave up the ground game in the 1980s, and the GOP, with the help of the alt-white -- Thanks to Reagan's and Atwater's "Southern Strategy", took that ball and ran with it and are still running with it.

If only someone'd warned them all that time.

@Bliss: Ah, yes. The classic Dem problem since the 1990s. They talk a mean game but then stick to the metro areas and large EC votes states, for the most part.

No small number of folks in the Southeast, Industrial Midwest, and the Plains and Central US haven't forgotten that they voted for Clinton, who campaigned in opposition to NAFTA but then fast-tracked it once in office. He also promised millions of them education and job training for losing their exported jobs, and he pretty much...

@th3j35t3r: How many Scaramuccis will she last, or will we wind up with a shorter unit of time, Habbas?

2/2: The Soviets pulled off a great switch. From the 1920s until the 1980s they infiltrated Western press, academic, and labor, but then they pivoted after Reagan and their buckling under Bush I to taking over the American Right, their staunchest foes/foils throughout the 20th century. The neoliberals gave them the best assists ever, too, by essentially giving up on Progressivism and Labour.

Everyone was warned, but no, "the Cold War is over!"

And here we are.

1/2: The Right/Alt-White Wing rank-and-file have for decades been fearing and campaigning against a police state, a surveillance state, a kleptocratic state, i.e., The Deep State, and now they're about to get one, and I imagine that for some number of them, especially black and Latino members of that political wing, are going to finally understand what folks with any sense have been saying for decades:

If you get your guys elected, your numbers are up because they do't want you here/free.

@TetsuKaba @Museek: The federal government will do everything it possibly can to seize the Native land and/or the mineral rights and sell/lease them to the miners and such. They'll promise casinos or something. The companies might offer the tribes a percentage ownership or at least participation. Dunno.

@TetsuKaba @Museek: ...the holdouts will wind up taking much less than the initial offer.

(That's in Western NC.)

Buying the property for at or around market -- or possibly a few percent above market, is fine for them because they know what they'll reap from it. They'll recoup it all from federal and state subsidies alone in less than a year or two.

@TetsuKaba @Museek: I disagree. Pennies on the dollar? I doubt that. They'll likely offer approximately what the land is worth undeveloped, no mineral rights and such, and if refused, they'll do what the shopping mall and complex did in the city I went to college:

While the holdouts try to sell for the max, everyone else around them will sell, and then the company/companies will make the holdouts' lives absolutely damn miserable, all while keeping to the letter of the law. Then...

@GNious: So leaving NM, CO, VA, and IL is the price of freedom.

@TetsuKaba @Museek: Ah, I forgot about that lithium. I'd be willing to wager those MAGAfolk will fuss a lot but then take large checks for the land. The difference between that land and the Native lands in the PNW is stark, though. The MAGAfolk can go buy other land where they can be far away from people. The history's different for the Native Americans.
