I've tried to explain this to one of my siblings. I look at history and my historical research more "clinically" while they will very much "pick sides" and that's about it. Don't get me wrong - I often pick sides, depending on the event, but I can also analyze it, pick it apart, and explain it without getting heated. That doesn't mean I'm ok with atrocity. Hell, part of why I got into history was to uncover atrocities.

@Agatha: It's related to that quote that Aristotle didn't say/write but is attributed to him anyway:

"It is the mark of an educated mind to entertain a thought without accepting it."
