@ravesquirrel: Just study, really. I buy dictionaries, workbooks, audios, watch foreign-language films with subtitles, and am an etymology nerd. So I also study languages similarities, roots, histories, and shifts over time.
The hooks in languages for me are rhythm/cadence and words/phrases that fill in semantic/semiotic gaps in English and other languages I understand.
