Perhaps people feel a measure of comfort over the phone than face to face. Or maybe they feel as if phone technology hasn't improved over time so they have to shout to be heard?

@SmirkingRaven: I do not see how comfort leads to a marked increase in volume in casual conversation. 🤷‍♂️

I can see how older folks (maybe the 60+) might have the habit of loud phone voice due to Ye Telephonic Days of Yore.

@thedisasterautist I find that sometimes when people are more relaxed they often stop worrying about such things as volume control.

Honestly, I have no idea why people tend to be louder on the phone. Something about holding a device to one's ears equals louder; it happens when people wear headphones as well.
